Text Editing

vi
-- ``visual'' editor. This is an old and primitive editor by today's standards, but it does work and it does do the job quite well if you can get used to it. Type vi filename to get it going, where filename is the name of the file you wish to edit.
xedit
-- simple editor made from a Motif Widget (or Athena Widget) to run under X. It's very easy and intuitive to use, but a bit too simplistic for me. Type xedit filename or just xedit to run it. I have a handout on the xedit editor.
emacs
-- I have no idea what it means, but this is an excellent editor and it is my editor of choice. Type emacs filename or just emacs to edit a file. For today, start up emacs just by entering
emacs note . Then type in the following information:
   Name:
   Nickname(?):
   Section:
   Major:
   Preferred e-mail address:

-Any computer experience you might have.
   -What is your favorite band?
-- To save your file, go to the top menu and click on FILE-Save Buffer. You know your file saved when you see a message at the bottom of the emacs window saying "wrote blah/blah/blah/note". Or when you try to save again you'll notice that Save Buffer is faded out.
